VW WESTPHALIA MOBILE

I'm in the process of updating my in-motion mobile antenna now that there is some 10 meter activity while 17 remains a favorite. The CB whip and LDG tuner range would not extend from 6 to 17 meters so improvements were needed.

My most recent project takes the following coil with modifications to make 6 through 20 meters possible with little adjustment.

Modifications:

Hustler 1 KW 20 meter coil with 3/8x24 threads on the bottom. Replace the coil top with the top from a Hustler 1KW 80 meter resonator giving a longer stinger and stem.  The length can be adjusted up to 101" when used with the standard Hustler mast and a quick disconnect.

Tap the open 20 meter windings with solder lugs and a wire or a shorting bar to lower or shorten the operating point of the antenna.  The LDG auto tuner will fine tune the results effectively broadning the tuning range.
The Hustler mast is more robust than a CB whip which had the tendancy to wig-wag in the wind and because of body capacity, change SWR.  Performance was always very good.

Previous antenna:  For 40 & 80 meters, 100mH silver plated coil are shown along side the 706 and an open Hustler 1KW resonator.  The coil is viewed from the base end where a #10 jumper wire is attached to move to the proper tapping point as indicated by an MFJ-249.  This coil will cover all bands but was designed with 160 through 40 in mind using a 102" whip.  I have not tried 160 meters but suspect a large top hat will be necessary. It will operate 40 through 10 using a 48" whip but the tap points become very sensitive.  Special care was used to construct the coil shorting end and it is three 1" .08 diameter wire soldered side by side and pops between the windings.  No clips to damage the thin silver plating.

11/07/2000 Modified for a 80 meter cap at the top.  Prior: The 20 through 10 coil is constructed from two 20M 1KW Hustler resonators.  This coil uses #12 wire spaced one turn so it is easy to solder taps to the windings.  I removed the end cap tapped for the whip, then removed the 3/8" X 24 threaded end from another and added it to this coil giving each end the 3/8" X 24 thread.  With the addition of Hustler quick disconnects, I can snap any size antenna mast and whip together in seconds.
